Dredging and sludge dewatering - Bitanya WWTP

During the Wastewater and Sewage Facility’s years of activity, sludge has accumulated within its ventilation and sedimentation pool, thus reducing the pool’s active volume. As a result, a reduction in the quality of the treated waste water has occurred. In order to improve the treated waste water’s quality in the facility, cleaning of the accumulated sludge is required.

The cleaning process was carried out in several stages:

  • Pumping the sediments with a DREDGER. Approximately 6,000 m3 of sludge were pumped with a solids concentration of about 5%.
  • Polymers were added to the sludge being pumped in order to create flocculation which facilitates the filtering process in the sequel.
  • Sludge discharging into the Geoube® system.
  • Water filtration and pouring back into the pool.

The dewatered sludge was left within the Geotubes for some more time for the purpose of additional curing and reduction of its volume.

Results

  • About a week later, the sludge within the Geotube® was examined and it was found that its solids concentration has ascended to 25%.
  • Preliminary tests indicated that a significant improvement in the quality of the treated waste water emanating from the Wastewater and Sewage Treatment Facility has taken place.
